TheUitpa Formation (Spanish:Formación Uitpa, E3u) is afossiliferousgeological formation of theCocinetas Basin in the northernmostdepartment ofLa Guajira. The formation consists ofcalcareousmudstones interbedded withlithicsandstones. The Uitpa Formation dates to theNeogene period;Aquitanian toBurdigalian stages, corresponding to theColhuehuapian in theSALMA classification, and has a maximum thickness of 230 metres (750 ft).

The formation was defined by Renz in 1960 and named after Uitpa.^[1]

The Uitpa Formation consists ofcalcareousmudstones interbedded withlithicsandstones.^[2][3]

The Uitpa Formation overlies theSiamaná Formation and is overlain by theJimol Formation. The age has been estimated to beEarly Miocene, corresponding to theColhuehuapian in theSALMA classification. The formation has been deposited in anopen todeep marineenvironment.^[4]

The Uitpa Formation is areservoir andseal rock formation in theGuajira Basin.^[5]
