The Uitenhage Commando was established atUitenhage on 29 June 1973 and was later renamed toDe Mist Commando on 7 November 1984. Uitenhage Commando is not to be confused withUitenhage Regiment which was an industrial unit.
During this era, the unit was mainly used for area force protection, search and cordones as well as stock theft control assistance to the local police.
The de Mist Commando, along with all otherCommando units was disbanded after a decision by South African PresidentThabo Mbeki to disband all Commando Units.[1][2] The Commando system was phased out between 2003 and 2008 "because of the role it played in the apartheid era", according to theMinister of Safety and SecurityCharles Nqakula.[3]
