USSMassachusetts (SSN-798) is aVirginia-classnuclear poweredattack submarine currently being built for theUnited States Navy. She is the 25th submarine of the class, and is named for theU.S. state ofMassachusetts—theeighth such vessel.
SSN-798 was part of a $17.6 billion contract awarded by the U.S. Navy to prime contractorGeneral Dynamics Electric Boat to construct 10Virginia-class submarines.[4]Ray Mabus, thenSecretary of the Navy, announced the nameMassachusetts on 8 November 2015 in an opinion piece forThe Boston Globe.[5] She is the first vessel to be named after the Commonwealth since the battleshipUSS Massachusetts (BB-59) was decommissioned in 1947.[6]
Her keel was laid 11 December 2020 atNewport News Shipbuilding, in a virtual ceremony due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[2] She was christened byship sponsorSheryl Sandberg on 6 May 2023.[3] In November 2023, Secretary of the NavyCarlos Del Toro advised thatBoston would be the site of the vessel's commissioning.[7]
She completed her initial sea trials on 7 October 2025.[8] The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of her on 21 November.[9] The submarine is now scheduled to enter service in the spring of 2026.[10]
