While the UFC has hosted many events inNorthern California, the event marked the promotion's first visit to Fresno.[2] FormerZuffa subsidiaryStrikeforce previously contested five events in Fresno, the most recent inOctober 2010.[3]
A featherweight bout betweenCub Swanson andBrian Ortega served as the event headliner.[4][5][6]
Promotional newcomerJohn Phillips was expected to faceEryk Anders at the event. However, Phillips was removed from the card on November 2 and was replaced by fellow newcomerMarkus Perez Echeimberg.[7]
Rani Yahya was expected to faceAljamain Sterling at this event. However, Yahya was forced to pull out from the card on November 7 due to injury.[8] He was replaced by formerWSOF Bantamweight ChampionMarlon Moraes.[9]
Bryan Caraway was expected to faceLuke Sanders at the event. However, on November 20, Caraway pulled out of the fight due to undisclosed reasons.[10] He was replaced byAndre Soukhamthath.[11]
Carls John de Tomas andAlex Perez were expected to meet in a flyweight bout at this event. However, theCSAC elected to move the bout to the bantamweight division as they were concerned with De Tomas weight during fight week.[12]
Benito Lopez was fined 10% of his show money by the CSAC due to shoving his opponentAlbert Morales at the weigh-ins ceremony. That money will go directly to the commission.[13]

On December 29, it was announced that Carl John de Tomas failed aUSADA drug test stemming from his appearance at this event following his weigh-in.[17] On February 5, he accepted a one-year suspension.[18]
