UFC 274: Oliveira vs. Gaethje was amixed martial arts event produced by theUltimate Fighting Championship that took place on May 7, 2022, at theFootprint Center inPhoenix, Arizona, United States.[3]

Background

The event was originally linked toRio de Janeiro,Brazil, but the promotion eventually decided to move the event from that location.[4] It took place inPhoenix, Arizona. It was the city's first event sinceUFC on ESPN: Ngannou vs. Velasquez in February 2019.[3]

AUFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between current championGlover Teixeira and formerRizin Light Heavyweight ChampionJiří Procházka was expected to take place at the event.[5] However, the bout was pushed back toUFC 275 for undisclosed reasons.[6]

AUFC Lightweight Championship bout between current championCharles Oliveira and former interim championJustin Gaethje (also formerWSOF Lightweight Champion) headlined the event.[7] At the weigh-ins, Oliveira weighed in at 155.5 pounds, half a pound over the title limit. As a result, upon commencement of the fight, Oliveira was stripped of the title and only Gaethje was eligible to win it.[8]

AUFC Women's Strawweight Championship rematch between current two-time championRose Namajunas and former champion (also formerInvicta FC Strawweight Champion)Carla Esparza took place at the event.[9] The pairing previously met 7 and a half years prior atThe Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned Finale for the inaugural championship, which Esparza won via third round submission.[10]

A lightweight bout betweenJoe Lauzon and former lightweight title challengerDonald Cerrone was scheduled forUFC on ESPN: Font vs. Vera.[11] However, the bout was removed from this event.[12] In turn, the bout was cancelled on the day of the event when Cerrone suffered from food poisoning.[13]

Amanda Ribas and formerInvicta FC Atomweight ChampionMichelle Waterson were expected to meet at this event.[14] They were originally expected to meet atUFC 257, but Waterson pulled out of the bout due to undisclosed reasons.[15] They were then rescheduled forUFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Daukaus, but an injury forced Waterson out of the pairing once again.[16] Waterson announced in early March that her injury could potentially be "career ending" and would not compete at this event.[17]

A lightweight bout betweenMichael Johnson andAlan Patrick was expected to take place at the event.[18] However, the bout was pushed back one week toUFC on ESPN: Błachowicz vs. Rakić for undisclosed reasons.[19]

At the weigh-ins,Norma Dumont weighed in at 146.5 pounds, half a pound over the women's featherweight non-title fight limit. Her bout proceeded at catchweight and she was fined 30% of her individual purse, which went to her opponentThe Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters women's featherweight winnerMacy Chiasson.[8]

It was announced during the event's broadcast that formerUFC Light Heavyweight andHeavyweight ChampionDaniel Cormier will be inducted into theUFC Hall of Fame at this year's class.[20]

This event had five split decision bouts tyingUFC 222 for the most split decision bouts in UFC history.[21]
