UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 (also known asUFC Fight Night 23) was amixed martial arts event held by theUltimate Fighting Championship on January 22, 2011 atFort Hood, nearKilleen, Texas.[2] The event was the third that theUFC has hosted in cooperation with aUS military base, followingUFC Fight Night 7 andUFC: Fight for the Troops.
The bout betweenKenny Florian andEvan Dunham was expected forUFC 126, but was moved to this card to serve as the main event.[3] On December 6, however, Florian pulled out of the bout due to a knee injury.Melvin Guillard was pulled from a planned preliminary bout withYves Edwards and faced Dunham in the main event.[4] Edwards instead facedTUF 12 alumnusCody McKenzie.[5]
On December 30, 2010, a bout betweenMike Swick andDavid Mitchell was called off due to Mitchell suffering an injury and Swick dealing with his Esophageal Condition.[6] A late replacement fight betweenWill Campuzano andChris Cariaso was signed.[7]
A lightweight bout betweenCole Miller andMatt Wiman, which was originally scheduled to take place atUFC 125, was moved to this event.[8]
Rani Yahya was expected to faceChan Sung Jung at this event,[9] but Jung was forced from the card with an injury,[10] and replaced byMike Brown.[11]
On January 11, 2011,Dana White announced that ifMark Hominick defeatedGeorge Roop at this event, he would become the top contender for theUFC Featherweight Championship and would face championJosé Aldo atUFC 129.[12]
On January 18,Dana White announced that theUFC would be streaming the McKenzie vs. Edwards andJohnson vs.Guymon fights for free on their officialFacebook page.[13]However, on the night of the fights, UFC.com officials announced that four prelims would show, adding theFreire vs.Lowe and Brown vs. Yahya fights.[14]
