Type A Films was a filmproduction company founded by Debra Siegel and actress and producerReese Witherspoon in 2000.

Name

[edit]

The media believed Type A Films was named after a nickname from Witherspoon’s childhood, "Little Miss Type A".[1][2] However, when asked about the company byInterview magazine, she clarified the name's origin: "... people think I named it after myself... It was actually anin-joke with my family because at [age] 7 I understood complicated medical terms, such as the difference betweentype A and type B personalities. But I just wished I'd named the company Dogfood Films or Fork or something. You carry that baggage all your life."[3]

History

[edit]

Witherspoon wanted to start her own company to be able to produce quality films for young women. Her success withLegally Blonde allowed Type A Films to expand and get more recognition in the industry. Before Jennifer Simpson became its president in 2002, she was the head of development and production forBarry Mendel Productions where she worked on films, such asThe Sixth Sense andThe Royal Tenenbaums.[4]

In 2012, the company merged withBruna Papandrea's Make Movies banner to create a new production company entitledPacific Standard.[5] In November 2016, Witherspoon, Seth Rodsky andOtter Media formedHello Sunshine, of which Pacific Standard became asubsidiary.[6]
