Tyler Coppin (born 9 November 1956) is an American-Australianactor,playwright and Americandialect coach for actors in film, television and theatre.
Coppin is a fourth-generation Californian born inRoseville, California, the second child of Ronald and Gayle (Terry) Coppin. He was raised in theSacramento suburbs ofRancho Cordova andCarmichael, California. The Coppin family are also long-term residents ofStinson Beach, California. Coppin attendedRio Americano High School andCalifornia State University, Sacramento before migrating to Australia aged 19, where he attended and graduated from theNational Institute of Dramatic Art.
He divides his time between the United States and Australia after residing inSydney for many years working intheatre, film and television. In 2001 Coppin moved toMelbourne with Jane Borghesi where the couple married in 2006. They have one son.
He became an Australian citizen in 1993.[1]
Coppin's many stage appearances include theChild Catcher in the Australian national production ofChitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mr Mushnik in the 2016 Australian national tour ofLittle Shop of Horrors,Robert Helpmann in his one-man playLyrebird: Tales of Helpmann, andPuck in the acclaimedOpera Australia production ofBenjamin Britten'sA Midsummer Night's Dream directed byBaz Luhrmann with set and costumes byCatherine Martin. In 1989, at the request of playwrightPatrick White he played the role of Young Manitoba in theSydney Theatre Company production ofThe Ham Funeral, directed byNeil Armfield.
Coppin has appeared in theMelbourne Theatre Company's production ofBorn Yesterday,His Girl Friday,Ruby Moon,A Behanding in Spokane by playwrightMartin McDonagh, and as Vice Principal Panch inThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which he wrote additional material.
His television appearances includeNightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King andNeighbours.
His film appearances includeHacksaw Ridge directed byMel Gibson,The Spierig Brothers'Winchester andPredestination,The Death and Life of Otto Bloom,The Tender Hook,Emulsion,One Night Stand,Lorca and the Outlaws andMad Max 2.
Coppin is also a dialect coach of the American accent, having started training actors during the 1980’sAustralian New Wave film era. These includeHeath Ledger,Melissa George,Joel Edgerton,Magda Szubanski,Ben Mendelsohn,Colin Friels,Marcus Graham,Madeleine Madden andMavournee Hazel.[2][3]
He has also narrated several audiobooks, including an adaptation of the American children's TV seriesBear in the Big Blue House, released byABC for Kids.
