Twisted ToyFare Theatre (TTT) was a popular, humorouscomic strip in the monthly magazineToyFare.
Originally titledTwisted Mego Theatre, it predominantly featured 8-inch (200 mm) scaleaction figures made by theMego Corporation (a line very popular in the 1970s, during the childhood years of much of the magazine's staff), and principally those based onMarvel Comics characters, such asSpider-Man ("Mego Spidey")[1] and theIncredible Hulk. The artwork was done in thefumetti style by photographing toys on sets built by the magazine's staff, and usingPhotoshop to add effects andword balloons. The series was known for its bizarre humor andpop-culture references.
Twisted Mego Theatre debuted inToyFare's 1996 Winter Special. The strip ended whenToyFare published its final issue in January 2011.[2]
Collectively, the strips take place in a fictional world called Megoville.[1]
Many earlyTwisted ToyFare Theatre strips featured severalDC Comics characters, though an early strip entitled "The Super-Friends" featured Spider-Man insulting the DC heroes for their ridiculousness. DC later filed acease and desist order, preventingTwisted ToyFare Theatre from ever using DC characters.[1]
The television showRobot Chicken, which features animated action figures, directly sprung fromTwisted ToyFare Theatre, as former writersTom Root andDouglas Goldstein are head writers for the show, along with fellowTwisted ToyFare Theatre alumnusMatthew Senreich.[1]
