Turan Mirzayev (Azerbaijani:Turan Mirzəyev; born September 24, 1979, inLankaran) is anAzerbaijaniweightlifter.[1] He is a three-time Olympian and a two-time medalist for the 69 kg class at theEuropean Weightlifting Championships (2001 inTrenčín,Slovakia, and2003 inLoutraki, Greece).
Mirzayev made his official debut for the2000 Summer Olympics inSydney, where he hauled 327.5 kilograms in total for a ninth-place finish in themen's lightweight class (69 kg). Following his further successes from the European Championships, Mirzayev was considered a top medal contender for his division at the2004 Summer Olympics inAthens. Unfortunately, he missed out his Olympic medal shot when he lifted a total of 332.5 kg in the69 kg category, finishing only in fourth place by five kilograms short of Croatia'sNikolaj Pešalov (337.5 kg).[2]
At the2008 Summer Olympics inBeijing, Mirzayev competed for his third consecutive time in themen's 69 kg class, along with his fellow weightlifterAfgan Bayramov. Mirzayev placed fifth in this event, as he successfully lifted 146 kg in the single-motionsnatch, and hoisted 181 kg in the two-part, shoulder-to-overheadclean and jerk, for a total of 327 kg.[3]
