Trumbert (orTunberht orTunbeorht) was a monk ofJarrow, a disciple ofChad and laterBishop of Hexham.
Trumbert was educated at Lastingham by Chad, and was a teacher ofBede.[1] He was thebishop of thesee ofHexham from 681 until he was deposed in 684 and was succeeded byEata.[2] He had previously been a monk atRipon underWilfrid. After his deposition, he became abbot atGilling Abbey in north Yorkshire.[3] He was the brother ofCeolfrith, who was abbot of Jarrow while Bede was a monk at Jarrow.[3]
The Trumbert Shaft is part of an inscribed sandstone grave cross found in theparish ofYarm,North Yorkshire in 1877. It bears the inscriptions inLatin andOld English:
