Triplemanía XXVIII was aprofessional wrestling event produced and scripted by the Mexicanprofessional wrestling promotionLucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA). The event was originally scheduled to take place on August 22, 2020 atArena Ciudad de México inMexico City, but was moved to December 12 due to theCOVID-19 pandemic. It marked the 28th year in a row that AAA has held aTriplemanía show, and the 34th overall show held under the Triplemanía banner since 1993. The annual Triplemanía show is AAA's biggest event of the year, serving as the culmination of major storylines in what has been described as AAA's version ofWrestleMania or theirSuper Bowl event.
In the main event match,Pagano successfully defended his hair and won the hair ofChessman in aLucha de Apuestas Hair vs. Hair match. In other prominent matches,Kenny Omega defeatedLaredo Kid to successfully defend theAAA Mega Championship andLady Shani won the inauguralCopa Triplemanía Femenil. The event also hosted the first match ofMarvel'sLucha Libre Edition project, during whichTerror Púrpura andVenenoide defeatedAracno andLeyenda Americana.
2020 marked the 28th year that the Mexicanprofessional wrestling companyLucha Libre AAA Worldwide (Triple A or AAA) has held their annual flagshipTriplemanía show. Triplemanía is the company's biggest show of the year, the AAA equivalent ofWWE'sWrestleMania orNew Japan Pro-Wrestling'sWrestle Kingdom event. Triplemanía XXVIII will be the 34th overall Triplemanía show promoted by AAA (AAA promoted multiple Triplemanía shows over the summers of 1994 to 1997). Since the2012 event, Triplemanía has taken place at theArena Ciudad de México (Mexico City Arena), an indoorarena inAzcapotzalco,Mexico City,Mexico that has a maximum capacity of 22,300 spectators.[1][2][3][4]
Triplemanía XXVIII was originally scheduled to take place on August 22, 2020,[5] but was later postponed indefinitely due to theCOVID-19 pandemic. During a virtual press conference on October 26, AAA announced that the event would be held at Arena Ciudad de México in December 2020.[6]
On November 20, 2020,Lucha Central reported that Triplemanía would be held on December 26;[7] AAA later stated that theLucha Central report was incorrect and the event would occur on December 12 in Arena Ciudad de México.[8] On November 30, AAA announced that the event would be heldbehind closed doors due to the worsening pandemic.[9]
Triplemanía XXVIII featured sevenprofessional wrestling matches, with different wrestlers involved in pre-existingscripted feuds,plots andstorylines. Wrestlers portrayed eitherheels (referred to asrudos in Mexico, those that portray the "bad guys") orfaces (técnicos in Mexico, the "good guy" characters) as they engaged in a series of tension-building events, which culminated in a wrestling match.[10][11]
On October 19, 2019 atHéroes Inmortales XIII,All Elite Wrestling's (AEW)Kenny Omega defeatedFénix to win theAAA Mega Championship.[12] Omega subsequently defended the title successfully four times in both AAA and AEW.[13] On October 26, 2020, during a virtual press conference, AAA announced that Omega would make his fifth defense of the championship at Triplemanía againstLaredo Kid.[6]
On March 11, 2020, it was announced thatPagano andChessman would participate in aLucha de Apuestas Hair vs. Hair match at Triplemanía. The two would brawl at the Triplemanía press conference following the match's announcement.[5]
On October 26, 2020, during a virtual press conference, AAA announced that they had entered into a partnership withMarvel Comics to promote the new MarvelLucha Libre EditionFunko Pop line.[6] As part of the partnership, AAA will host a Marvel tag team exhibition match at Triplemanía, which will pitSpider-Man andCaptain America againstThanos and Venom (known respectively in Mexico as Aracno and Leyenda Americana and Terror Púrpura and Venenoide);[14] all four characters appear in theLucha Libre Edition line.[15]
Triplemanía XXVIII was originally planned to be themed around theHéroe o Villano tournament, which would have featured wrestlers from AAA's American partners AEW andImpact Wrestling. On March 11, 2020, it was announced that the tournament would culminate in a five-man match at Triplemanía.[16] The match was removed from the card during a virtual press conference on October 26, 2020.[6]
On March 11, 2020, it was announced that Triplemanía XXVIII would feature aParejas Suicidas Tag Team Tournament, where the team that lost in the finals would have to face each other in aLucha de Apuestas Mask vs. Mask match.[17] It was later announced that Jinetes del Aire (Myzteziz Jr. andOctagon Jr.),La Parka Negra and Dave the Clown,Aero Star andDrago, andLos Lucha Brothers (Fénix andPentagón Jr.) were the teams participating in the tournament.[17] The tournament was removed from the card during a virtual press conference on October 26, 2020.[6]
On September 15, 2019, atLucha Invades NY,Taya Valkyrie (who previously wrestled for AAA as simply Taya) defeatedTessa Blanchard to become a three-timeAAA Reina de Reinas Champion.[18] On November 20, 2020,Lucha Central reported that Valkyrie would defend her championship againstLady Shani at Triplemanía.[7] The match was later removed from the card.
During autumn of this year, the first 4 wrestlers of this group will be announced, who will be called to revolutionize the AAA lineup. On the one hand, we will have the technical wrestlers: Aracno and Leyenda Americana and, on the other hand, we will have the tough wrestlers: Terror Púrpura and Venenoide. It will be at the next AAA event, Triplemanía XXVIII, to be held on December at the Arena Ciudad de México, in Mexico City, when the public will be able to watch them live and appreciate the moves, holds, counter offenses and evolution of these wrestlers inspired by their beloved Marvel Super Heroes and villains.
