Travis Willingham is an American voice actor known for his character portrayals in video games and English animedubs. His notable roles includeRoy Mustang in theFullmetal Alchemist franchise, Cleo inGlass Fleet, Ginko inMushishi,Portgas D. Ace inOne Piece, Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka inOuran High School Host Club,Yu Kanda inD. Gray-man, and Cameron Campbell inCamp Camp.
Willingham's video game roles includeGuile in theStreet Fighter franchise,Knuckles the Echidna in theSonic the Hedgehog franchise,Thor in variousMarvel games, and Isaac Frost inFight Night Champion. He has been a cast member of the web seriesCritical Role since 2015, in which he and other voice actors playDungeons & Dragons. He co-founded the production companyCritical Role Productions, for which he has beenchief executive officer (CEO) since 2019.
Travis Willingham was born inDallas.[1][2] He has a brother named Carson.[2][3] He became interested in acting in fifth grade. After sixth grade, he moved from a private school to J.L. Long Middle School.[2] He later graduated fromWoodrow Wilson High School,[4][5] and studied atTexas Christian University.
Willingham learned that the English dub ofDragon Ball Z was being recorded in Dallas, and askedLaura Bailey, who he knew through their talent agency, to "put in a good word for him". A director there asked him to audition for the part ofRoy Mustang inFullmetal Alchemist, and he received the role. While he described it as "the most intensive, spirit-crushing time ever in voiceover”, it ultimately led to his rise to prominence in the industry.[6][7] He later reprised the role inFullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.[8]
After moving to Los Angeles, Willingham attempted to pursue a career in acting but fared poorly due to his tall height (6 ft 4in). He returned to voice acting at the suggestion of his agent; Willingham had been unaware that so much voice work was recorded in the city.[6] He went on to perform in a number of notable roles includingYu Kanda inD.Gray-man, Cleo inGlass Fleet, Ginko inMushishi,Portgas D. Ace in theFunimation re-dub ofOne Piece andTakashi Morinozuka inOuran High School Host Club. He also voicesThor in severalMarvel projects andKing Roland II inDisney Junior'sSofia the First. From 2010 to 2018, he was the voice ofKnuckles the Echidna in theSonic the Hedgehog series.[9][10]
Willingham is also a main cast member of the popularDungeons & Dragons web seriesCritical Role, where he played Grog in thefirst campaign, Fjord in thesecond campaign, and a dual role as Sir Bertrand Bell and Chetney Pock O'Pea in thethird campaign.[11][12]Critical Role was both the Webby Winner and the People's Voice Winner in the "Games (Video Series & Channels)" category at the 2019Webby Awards;[13] the show was also both a Finalist and the Audience Honor Winner at the 2019Shorty Awards.[14] After becoming hugely successful, theCritical Role cast left theGeek & Sundry network in early 2019 and set up their own production company calledCritical Role Productions,[15][16][17][18] for which Willingham isCEO.[13] Soon after, they aimed to raise $750,000 onKickstarter to create an animated series of their first campaign, but ended up raising over $11 million.[19][11] In November 2019,Amazon Prime Video announced that they had acquired the streaming rights to this animated series, now titledThe Legend of Vox Machina;[20] Willingham reprised his role as Grog.[21]
On September 25, 2011, Willingham married voice actressLaura Bailey inCamarillo, California.[22][23][24][25] They currently reside inLos Angeles and have a son named Ronin (b. 2018).[26][27]
Willingham is a lifelong fan of theDallas Cowboys.[28] Willingham hasADHD.[29]
