Travis Hunter Jr. (born May 18, 2003) is an American professionalfootballcornerback andwide receiver for theJacksonville Jaguars of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theJackson State Tigers andColorado Buffaloes, winning theHeisman Trophy with the latter in 2024. Known for histwo-way playing ability, Hunter is the only player in college football history to win both theChuck Bednarik andFred Biletnikoff Awards. He was selected by the Jaguarssecond overall in the2025 NFL draft.

Early life

Hunter was born on May 18, 2003, inWest Palm Beach, Florida where he was raised until later moving toAtlanta, Georgia near the end of his eighth grade year.[1][2] He would live with Frontia Fountain, an assistant football coach atCollins Hill High School inSuwanee, Georgia, for two years while playingcornerback andwide receiver for the Collins Hill Eagles.[1][2] As a sophomore, Hunter ledGwinnett County with seven interceptions, also recording 49 receptions for 919 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense.[2] As a junior, Hunter had eight interceptions and 51 tackles, in addition to catching 137 passes for 1,746 yards and 24 touchdowns. He earned theMaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year award.[3] He also set Gwinnett County single-season records in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns,[2] leading the Eagles to a 12–3 record and an appearance in the Class 7A state championship game.[3]

As a senior, Hunter recorded 76 receptions for 1,128 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense, and 23 tackles, four interceptions and a forced fumble on defense,[4] despite missing five games due to an ankle injury.[5] In the state championship game, Hunter had 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown, as well as a forced fumble to cap off a perfect 15–0 record and Collins Hill's first state title in school history.[6] In his final high school game, Hunter had 10 catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns in a 40–36 defeat to Washington state championsGraham-Kapowsin in the GEICO State Championship Bowl Series.[7] He also broke the Georgia state record in career receiving touchdowns with 48, previously held by Braxton Hicks.[7] Hunter played in the 2022Polynesian Bowl, where he won the offensive MVP honors after recording five receptions for 54 yards.[8]

Hunter was considered the number one overall ranked recruit by247Sports andRivals,[9][10] as well as number two byESPN (behindWalter Nolen).[11] After receiving a scholarship fromFlorida State, he committed to the Seminoles on March 3, 2020 (one day after making his first visit to the school).[12] On December 15, 2021, Hunter flipped his commitment to theJackson State Tigers coached byDeion Sanders.[4][13][14] Hunter became the first five-star recruit to sign with anHBCU orFCS school,[13] with the move being cited among the most surprising signings in college football recruiting history.[4][14]

Hunter recorded two receiving touchdowns and two interceptions in the Jackson Statespring game, which was the first HBCU spring game to ever be nationally televised.[15] Hunter made his collegiate debut in week 1 againstFlorida A&M, but did not record any statistics. In the win, Hunter sustained an undisclosed injury that kept him out five games.[16] Hunter returned in week 7 victory againstCampbell where he had four receptions for 24 yards. In week 10, Hunter recorded his first collegiate touchdown as well as his first interception againstAlabama A&M.[17] In week 11, Hunter had two receptions for a season high 49 yards and one touchdown againstAlcorn State. He also recorded an interception for the second consecutive week. In the2022 Celebration Bowl, Hunter had four receptions for 47 yards and two touchdowns.[18] As a freshman, Hunter accumulated 19 total tackles, eight pass breakups, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and one defensive touchdown in seven games played. On offense, he added 18 receptions for 188 yards and four touchdowns.[19]

Hunter transferred to theUniversity of Colorado Boulder in 2023, following Jackson State head coachDeion Sanders.[20] In hisFBS debut, Hunter played 147 total snaps across offense and defense in a 45–42 upset win overTCU.[21][22] In the win, Hunter had 11 receptions for 119 yards and three tackles with an interception on defense.[23] In week 3, Hunter sustained an injury during Colorado's overtime victory overrivalColorado State, which sidelined him for the next three games.[24] Hunter returned from injury week 7 againstStanford where he hauled in a season high 13 catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns.[25] In week 8, Hunter caught two interceptions against number 23 rankedUCLA.[26] In week 9, Hunter had eight catches for 98 yards and a score against number 16 rankedOregon State.[27] In week 11, Hunter had four receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown againstWashington State. In the season finale, Hunter caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown againstUtah.[28] On the season, Hunter hauled in 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, he recorded three interceptions and 30 tackles.[29] He totaled 1,036 snaps including 437 on offense, 568 on defense and 31 on special teams, averaging 115.1 per game.[30] He was named a 2023Consensus All-American and second-teamAll-PAC-12.[31][32] Hunter was also named recipient of thePaul Hornung Award.[33]

To open the 2024 season, Hunter had seven receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns in the win overNorth Dakota State.[34] In the September 7 game, Colorado was beaten 28–10 byNebraska. Hunter significantly impacted the offense with 10 catches for 110 yards, but he faced criticism for his lack of effort on the Cornhuskers' first score of the game.[35] In the September 21 game againstBaylor, Hunter made the game-winning forced fumble at the goal line in a 38–31 overtime thriller.[36] After finishing the regular season playing nearly 1,400 scrimmage snaps on offense and defense, 382 more than any other player in the country, Hunter won theHeisman Trophy. He was the Colorado Buffaloes second-ever Heisman winner, the first beingRashaan Salaam in 1994.[37] He was also only the second-ever defensive player to win the award, followingCharles Woodson in 1997.[38] In addition, Hunter was the first player in college football history to win both theChuck Bednarik Award, as the nation's top defensive player, and theFred Biletnikoff Award, as the nation's best wide receiver.[39]

In April 2025, theUniversity of Colorado retired Hunter’s No. 12 jersey during its spring game.[40]

Hunter was selected second overall in the2025 NFL draft by theJacksonville Jaguars in a trade involving theCleveland Browns.[43]

In Week 7 against theLos Angeles Rams atWembley Stadium, he scored his first NFL career touchdown on a 34-yard pass fromTrevor Lawrence and finished the game with 8 receptions for 101 yards in the 35–7 loss.[44][45] On October 30, Hunter suffered a knee injury during practice and was placed oninjured reserve the following day, with head coachLiam Coen announcing that he would miss up to four weeks.[46] On November 11, the Jaguars announced that Hunter had underwent successful surgery to repair a tornlateral collateral ligament in his right knee and ruled him out for the rest of the season.[47] In his rookie season, Hunter played in seven games before his injury. On offense, he recorded 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown. On defense, he recorded 15 tackles and three pass deflections.[48]

Personal life

Hunter's father, Travis Hunter Sr., starred on the football and track teams atBoynton Beach Community High School.[59] He went on to play semipro football in theFlorida Football Alliance and the Southern States Football League, winning the latter's Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2007.[59]

He married Leanna Lenee in May 2025.[60] Hunter has aTwitch channel and shares aYouTube channel with Leanna.[61][62] On August 27, 2025, Travis and his wife welcomed a son together.[63]

Hunter Jr. hadNIL deals in college withGreenwood and several ofMichael Strahan's brands.[64][65][66] Hunter was one of the cover athletes forEA Sports College Football 25 along withDonovan Edwards andQuinn Ewers.[67]

Hunter is aChristian. He was baptized at a church in Jacksonville, Florida in October 2025.[68]
