TheA2 highway is a road inBotswana running from theNamibian border atBuitepos throughJwaneng,Kanye andLobatse to theSouth African border atPioneer Gate, thus connecting 3 countries.[1]
The A2 is a major component of theTrans-Kalahari Corridor, which is a highway corridor that provides a direct route fromPretoria to central Namibia, in particular toWindhoek and the port ofWalvis Bay. There are potholes scattered around the road, causing immediate danger.[2]
The A2 begins at theBuitepos border withNamibia, where it is designated as theB6 road on the Namibian side towardsGobabis andWindhoek. It begins by heading eastwards for 165 kilometres to meet the south-western terminus of theA3 road about 45 kilometres south-west ofGhanzi in theGhanzi District.[3]
The A2 turns to the south-east and heads for 380 kilometres, throughKang, to enter Sekoma, where it meets the north-eastern terminus of theA20 road. It continues east-south-east for 157 kilometres, throughJwaneng, to enter the town ofKanye, where it meets the south-western terminus of theA10 road. It continues south-east for 50 kilometres to reach a junction with theA1 road just south ofLobatse. It continues eastwards for 11 kilometres to reach its end at the Pioneer Gate border withSouth Africa, where it becomes theN4 road (Platinum Highway) on the South African side towardsZeerust. The border on the South African side is calledSkilpadshek.[3]
On 29 April 2024, 7 South African nationals died in a crash while driving on this road.[4]
