Etymology

The termtramezzino was coined byGabriele D'Annunzio toreplace the English wordsandwich.[2] It is the diminutive of the wordtramezzo, meaning 'in-between' (formed with the addition of thesuffix-ino).

The origin of thetramezzino can be found in the Caffè Mulassano inPiazza Castello, Turin, where it was devised in 1925 as an alternative to Englishtea sandwich.[3][4] In July 19, the newspaperLa Cucina Italiana wrote the first official recipe for the sandwich.[citation needed]
