Trackhouse Racing is an Americanmotorsports organization that competes full time in theNASCAR Cup Series andMotoGP and part time in theIMSA SportsCar Championship.

History

[edit]

AfterLeavine Family Racing announced the sale of its assets in summer 2020, formerNASCAR Cup Series driver and formerWorld of Outlaws andK&N Pro Series East team ownerJustin Marks placed a bid on the sale. LFR eventually sold their assets toSpire Motorsports.[1] On August 14, Marks confirmed the creation of his own team, Trackhouse, and revealed that formerDale Earnhardt Incorporated executiveTy Norris had been brought on to help run the team.[2] At that time, Marks had yet to strike a formal alliance with any manufacturer or team,[3] but already had one potential sponsor lined up.[4] From his ownership of a go-kart track and other family business ventures, Marks had the financial wherewithal to purchase a team without other means.[1] Marks aimed to be an unconventional team owner, with plans to use his team ownership platform as an advocate forSTEM education.[5]

On September 17, 2024, it was reported that Ty Norris left the team and was headed toKaulig Racing.[6]

Ownership

[edit]

The team is owned by Trackhouse Entertainment Group, a venture ofJustin Marks andAvenue Sports Fund.[7] The team was also previously partially owned byGrammy Award–winning rapperArmando Christian "Pitbull" Pérez.[8]

On May 30, 2021, motivational speaker and philanthropistTony Robbins hinted at investing in the team.[9]

On February 14, 2025, Pitbull announced on hisX account that his partnership and ownership status of the organization had been terminated effective immediately.[10] No further reason was given.

Acquisitions

[edit]

On January 9, 2023, a consortium consisting of Trackhouse,DEJ Management,Jeff Burton Autosports, Inc., andKevin Harvick Incorporated purchased theCARS Tour.[11][12]

NASCAR

[edit]

On June 10, Marks toldSirius XM NASCAR Radio that the team may expand to a two-car operation in 2022.[13] On June 30, 2021, Trackhouse announced their purchase of theNASCAR operations of Chip Ganassi Racing and along with it, its two charters for the No. 1 and the No. 42 teams, therefore announcing the team will be two cars in 2022. On September 16, Trackhouse signed a multi-year deal with2022 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championZane Smith. As part of a partnership deal, Smith would driveSpire Motorsports' third team in2024, and was expected to join Trackhouse full-time in a third team in 2025, though was released from his contract.[14] On January 11, 2024, Trackhouse announced that they would be hiringConnor Zilisch to a multi-year deal that includes him running in theNASCAR Xfinity Series,NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series,ARCA Menards Series,CARS Tour,Trans-Am Series, andIMSA in 2024 and 2025.[15]

The organization currently fields three full-timeChevrolet Camaro ZL1 cars: the No. 1 forRoss Chastain, the No. 88 forConnor Zilisch, and the No. 97 forShane van Gisbergen.[16]

Ross Chastain (2022–present)
Ross Chastain in the No. 1 atPocono Raceway in 2022

On August 3, 2021, the team announced thatRoss Chastain would drive their second car, the No. 1, in 2022.[17][18]

Chastain began the2022 season with a 40th place finish at the2022 Daytona 500 and a 29th place finish atFontana. He then rebounded with a third place finish atLas Vegas and two runner-up finishes atPhoenix andAtlanta. Chastain scored his first career cup win and Trackhouse's first ever win atCOTA.[19] A month later, he claimed his second victory atTalladega.[20] At the2022 NASCAR All-Star Race, Chastain finished 22nd after going airborne from colliding withKyle Busch, takingChase Elliott out in the process.[21] At theIndianapolis road course, Chastain crossed the line second toTyler Reddick, but was penalized and scored 27th place for crossing the access road during the final restart.[22] Chastain made the Championship 4 after the "Hail Melon" move atMartinsville by driving along the outside wall at full throttle, slingshotting his way to overtakeDenny Hamlin and finish fifth. Chastain would be credited a finish of fourth afterBrad Keselowski was disqualified following post-race tech inspection due to his car failing to meet the minimum weight requirement.[23] He finished third at thePhoenix finale and a career-best second place in the points standings.[24]

Chastain started the2023 season with a ninth-place finish at the2023 Daytona 500. Shortly after finishing fifth atKansas,Noah Gragson confronted him over a racing incident between them that resulted in Gragson hitting the outside wall. Gragson shoved Chastain, who retaliated with a punch to the face.[25] Chastain scored his first win of the season atNashville.[26] On July 11,Anheuser-Busch announced it signed a multi-year sponsorship deal with the No. 1 starting in 2024, ending its ten-year partnership with theStewart–Haas Racing No. 4 at the end of the season.[27] Chastain was eliminated from the Round of 12 at the conclusion of theCharlotte Roval race,[28] but won the season finale atPhoenix and finished ninth in the points standings.[29]

Chastain started the2024 season with a 21st place finish at the2024 Daytona 500. He was winless during the regular season and missed the playoffs after lower-rankedHarrison Burton ofWood Brothers Racing andChase Briscoe ofStewart–Haas Racing won races. Nevertheless, Chastain won during the Round of 12 atKansas.[30] Following theMartinsville playoff race, the No. 1 was docked fifty owner and driver points and Chastain and the team were each finedUS$100,000 for race manipulation, when Chastain and fellow Chevrolet driverAustin Dillon formed a blockade to allowWilliam Byron to make the Championship 4. In addition, Surgen was suspended for thePhoenix finale.[31]

Chastain started the2025 season with a 40th place DNF at the2025 Daytona 500. He scored his first win of the season at the2025 Coca-Cola 600.[32]
