TheToyota Gaia is a Japanese-marketMPV that competed with theNissan Prairie,Mitsubishi Chariot and theHonda Odyssey. It was later replaced by theToyota Isis. The Gaia shares a platform with theToyota Ipsum (sister model) andToyota Caldina (platform sharing). It was manufactured from May 1998 until September 2004 for the Japanese market. The Gaia was sold only at Japanese dealerships calledToyopet Store next to theCorona.
In April 2001, a DVD-based navigation system was introduced, a precursor to Toyota'sG-Book navigation system added as an option, and the3S-FE engine was upgraded to the1AZ-FSE withAWD. The 1AZ-FSE features Toyota's D-4direct injection system.
The vehicle was named forGaia; the primalGreekgoddess personifying theEarth.
