Toumin (Arabic:تومين,romanized: Tūmīn, also transliteratedToumine) is a village in northwesternSyria, administratively part of theHama Governorate. It is located 25 kilometers (16 mi) southwest ofHama and lies on the northern bank of theOrontes River, overlooking the city ofRastan.[1] Nearby localities includeDeir al-Fardis to the northwest,Kafr Buhum to the north,al-Rastan to the south andHoula to the southwest.
According to theCentral Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Toumin had a population of 2,129 in the 2004 census.[2] Its inhabitants are predominantlyGreek Orthodox Christians.[3]
In 1838, Toumin was recorded as a Greek Orthodox Christian village.[4] The village was formerly located at the site of theRastan Dam, but with the dam's construction in 1960, Toumin was relocated nearby to its present site.[5] In 1992, the Toumin Municipality was established to administer the village and the nearby Christian village ofal-Biyah.[1]
