Tote António "Toti"Gomes (born 16 January 1999) is a professionalfootballer who plays as acentre-back orleft-back forPremier League clubWolverhampton Wanderers. Born in Guinea-Bissau, he plays for thePortugal national team.

Club career

Gomes made hisLigaPro debut forEstoril on 5 May 2019 in a game againstAcadémico Viseu.[3]

On 2 September 2020, Gomes was signed by EnglishPremier League sideWolverhampton Wanderers and immediately loaned out toSwiss Challenge League sideGrasshopper Club Zürich for the 2020–21 season.[4][5] His first appearance for the Swiss club was a start in the opening game, againstWinterthur, which Grasshopper won. He scored his first goal for the Swiss side during a 5–2 loss againstKriens.

After a successful campaign with the Swiss club, which saw them promoted to theSwiss Super League, Gomes returned to Grasshoppers on another season-long loan.[6] He spent the first half of the 2021–22 season at Grasshopper but was then recalled by his parent club to spend January training at Wolverhampton before a potential return to Switzerland.[7]

WithRomain Saïss away at theAfrica Cup of Nations, Wolverhampton recalled Gomes at the same time as signing his Grasshoppers teammate,Hayao Kawabe. Gomes made his Wolverhampton Wanderers début in Saïss's position on 15 January 2022 in a 3–1Premier League victory overSouthampton atMolineux.[8] On 21 March 2022, Gomes signed a new contract with Wolves until 2027.[9] Toti scored his first goal for Wolves, and his first goal in the Premier League, on 6 May 2023 againstAston Villa at Molineux: it turned out to be the only goal of the game as Wolves won 1–0.[10]

Toti made his 50th competitive appearance for Wolves in a 4–2 win away toChelsea in the Premier League on 4 February 2024.[11]

On 8 February 2024, Wolves announced Toti had signed a five-and-a-half-year contract extension keeping him at Wolverhampton Wanderers until 2029.[12]

International career

Eligible for bothGuinea-Bissau and Portugal, Gomes represented Portugal atunder-20 level. On 29 May 2023, Gomes was called up to thePortugal senior national team for the first time, forEuro 2024 qualifiers againstBosnia & Herzegovina andIceland.[13]

Gomes made his senior debut for Portugal on 16 November 2023, starting and playing the full match in a 2–0 away victory overLiechtenstein, during qualifying forUEFA Euro 2024.[14]
