TheTorneo Gran Alternativa (2006) (Spanish for "Great Alternative Tournament") was aprofessional wrestling tournament held by the Mexicanprofessional wrestling promotionConsejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL; Spanish for "World Wrestling Council"). The tournament was held on June 2, 2006, inMexico City, Mexico at CMLL's main venue,Arena México. TheGran Alternativa tournament featurestag teams composed of a rookie, ornovato, and a veteran wrestler for an elimination tournament. The idea is to feature thenovato wrestlers higher on the card that they usually work and help elevate one or more up the ranks. Since it is a professional wrestling tournament, it is not won or lost competitively but instead by the decisions of thebookers of a wrestling promotion that is not publicized prior to the shows to maintain theillusion that professional wrestling is a competitive sport.[1]

The eight-team tournament was won by rookieMisterioso Jr. andPerro Aguayo Jr. by defeating the teams ofMáscara Purpura (rookie) andLizmark Jr.,Hombre Sin Nombre (rookie) andHéctor Garza and finally the team ofNitro (rookie) andÚltimo Guerrero. This was Misterioso Jr.'s thirdGran Alternativa tournament as a rookie, and Perro Aguayo Jr.'s onlyGran Alternativa win of his career.

Background

[edit]

Starting in 1994 the Mexicanprofessional wrestling promotionConsejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) created a special tournament concept where they would team up anovato, or rookie, with a veteran for a single-eliminationtag team tournament with the purpose of increasing the profile of the rookie wrestler.[2][3]

CMLL had used a similar concept in August 1994 whereNovatoShocker teamed up with veteransRingo Mendoza andBrazo de Plata to defeatnovatoApolo Dantés and veteransGran Markus Jr. andEl Brazo in the finals of a six-man tag team tournament.[4] CMLL would later modify the concept to two-mantag teams instead, creating a tournament that would be known asEl Torneo Gran Alternativa, or "The Great Alternative Tournament", which became a recurring event on the CMLL calendar.[5]
