Tōru Fujisawa (藤沢 とおる,Fujisawa Tōru, born 1967) is a Japanesemanga artist. His name is romanized asTohru Fujisawa on theTokyopop English-languageGreat Teacher Onizuka books and asToru Fujisawa on theKodansha bilingual releases. His first serialized work wasAdesugata Junjo Boy, published from 1989 inWeekly Shōnen Magazine. Fujisawa's best-known work isGreat Teacher Onizuka (GTO) about a biker, Eikichi Onizuka, and his attempt to become and remain a teacher. It is a sequel toShōnan Jun'ai Gumi! and its side storyBad Company. In 1998, Fujisawa won theKodansha Manga Award forGreat Teacher Onizuka.[2]

Fujisawa was born and raised inHokkaido and started drawing as a child. Fujisawa originally wanted to be in animation but decidedmanga would give him more freedom. He basedShonan Junai Gumi at a seaside location after growing up inland. At the age of 17, he moved toTokyo by himself to become amanga artist. He wrote science fictionDōjinshi and submitted them to publishers. He is a fan ofInitial D and was inspired byAkira.[3] He is also a fan of thebeat 'em up video gameSpartan X (Kung-Fu Master).[4]

In 2010, he married actress Ayano Sugiyama.[5][6][7]
