James Edward Anthony Tyler (31 October 1943 inBristol – 28 October 2006 inHastings,East Sussex) was a British writer who authored several books and wrote for the magazinesNME,Macworld,MacUser,PC Pro andComputer Shopper.[1]

He joined theNME in 1972, recruited by editor Alan Smith.[2]

He was an early expert on theMiddle-earth fiction ofJ. R. R. Tolkien, publishingThe Tolkien Companion in 1976. It was aconcordance describing all the characters, objects, and places named inThe Hobbit andThe Lord of the Rings (The Silmarillion was published the following year).[1] A revised edition was still in print in 2022 asThe Complete Tolkien Companion.[3]
