Anthony "Tony" Myler (born 26 September 1960) is an English former professionalrugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s who also became a coach. AGreat Britain international representativestand-off, he played club football in England forWidnes, with whom he won thePremiership during the1982–83 season, as well as a stint in Australia with theBalmain Tigers. Tony Myler is the brother of the rugby league footballerJohn Myler[1] and the uncle ofStephen Myler[2]
Myler played for Widnes RUFC Colts before embarking on a professional career with the Widnes rugby league club in 1978.
Tony Myler appeared as asubstitute (replacingFullbackMick Burke on 59-minutes) inWidnes 14–14 draw withHull F.C. in the1982 Challenge Cup Final during the1981–82 season atWembley Stadium,London on Saturday 1 May 1982, in front of a crowd of 92,147, was an unusedSubstitute in the 9–18 defeat byHull F.C. in the1982 Challenge Cup Finalreplay during the1981–82 season atElland Road,Leeds on Wednesday 19 May 1982, in front of a crowd of 41,171,
Australia played a match against Widnes during the1982 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France and Myler played at loose forward. In 1983 he was awarded theHarry Sunderland Trophy for man-of-the-match in that year'sPremiership Final.
During the1983–84 season Myler played stand-off half inWidnes' loss againstBarrow in the1983 Lancashire Cup Final atCentral Park,Wigan on Saturday 1 October 1983.
In 1986 Myler agreed to join Australian club, theBalmain Tigers during the English off-season as his Great Britain test teammateGarry Schofield had done.[3] During the1986 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France, Myler played for Great Britain at stand-off half in all three Ashes tests.
Myler played atStand-off inWidnes' 6–12 loss againstWigan in the1988–89 John Player Special Trophy Final during the1988–89 season atBurnden Park,Bolton on Saturday 7 January 1989.[4] During the1989–90 Rugby Football League season, he played for defending champions Widnes at stand-off half in their1989 World Club Challenge victory against the visitingCanberra Raiders. Myler'sTestimonial match atWidnes also took place in 1989.
During the1990–91 season Mylercaptained Widnes at stand-off half and scored atry in the 24–18 victory overSalford in the1990 Lancashire Cup Final atCentral Park,Wigan on Saturday 29 September 1990.
Following his retirement from playing, Myler became coach of Widnes in May 1994.[5] In August 1995 the club decided to bring backDoug Laughton for a third stint as team manager which resulted in Myler's sacking as coach.[6]
Myler was also on the coaching staff atSt. Helens andWarrington Wolves in the early years ofSuper League.[7]
