Tony Curran is a Scottish actor who has appeared in the filmUnderworld: Evolution (2006), the television seriesDoctor Who (2010), theminiseriesRoots (2016), and theNetflixhistorical drama filmOutlaw King (2018). He appears in different minor roles inMarvel Cinematic Universe productions, including the filmThor: The Dark World (2013), thesecond season of the Netflix seriesDaredevil (2016), and theDisney+ miniseriesSecret Invasion (2023). In late 2022, Curran starred in the BBC dramaMayflies.

Curran is a graduate of theRoyal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.[1]

Career

Curran appeared in theBBC television seriesThis Life. Since then, he has appeared in a number of major film and television roles, includingRodney Skinner (The Invisible Man), anoriginal character inThe League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. To portray the Invisible Man, he donned a special suit that turned him into a walkingbluescreen. (According to his commentary on theDVD, he looked like a "smurf onacid".) He also played vampire roles inGuillermo del Toro'sBlade II as Priest andUnderworld: Evolution as Markus. In 2006 he appeared in the unrated filmRed Road.[2]

Curran played the role of Datak Tarr on theSyfy seriesDefiance and in 2014, he costarred withDiana Vickers in the thriller filmAwaiting.[3] In 2016 Curran signed to play 'Callum' in the newE4/Netflix original seriesCrazyhead.

Curran portrayedVincent van Gogh in the science fiction television seriesDoctor Who.The episode, written byRichard Curtis, was rated byScreen Rant as the best ofMatt Smith's time asthe Doctor.[4] A scene where Curran plays van Gogh, taken into the future to see his work in a modern museum, has been described as one of the most emotional in the entire series.[5][6] Curran also made a cameo appearance in theDoctor Who episode "The Pandorica Opens".

In 2002, Curran played Sgt. Pete Twamley in theITV seriesUltimate Force, which was broadcast in over 100 countries. Curran later worked inseason 8 ofThe Flash where he portrayedDespero in his human form and voiced him in his true alien form starting in the five-part episode "Armageddon". He starred in the 2018 filmOutlaw King, alongsideChris Pine,Aaron Taylor-Johnson, andFlorence Pugh.

His lead performance in the poignant 2022BBC dramaMayflies was described byThe Guardian as "devastating".[7] In 2023, he joined theMarvel Cinematic Universe, playing aSkrull infiltrator who had assumed the identity of Derrik Weatherby, "C" of the British Secret Intelligence Service (a.k.a.MI6) in the seriesSecret Invasion. Tony also played a member of the Royal Air Force in the 2001 film titled Pearl Harbor which featured Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale, Cuba Gooding Junior and Josh Hartnett .

Personal life

In 2012, he married Mai Nguyen; the couple have a daughter.[1] Curran has campaigned for charities and was named as an official ambassador of theCeltic F.C. Foundation.[8]
