Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, professionally known asTonatiuh (Spanish:[toˈnatiw][1]), is an American actor, known for featuring in the seriesVida (2018–2020), the American soap operaPromised Land (2022),[2] and the filmKiss of the Spider Woman (2025).[3][4]

Life

Tonatiuh was born in Los Angeles to immigrant parents from Mexico. He[a] grew up in the neighborhood ofWest Covina with his mother, older brother, and grandmother. His mother cut hair in a beauty salon to support the family.[2]

He graduated fromUniversity of Southern California.[6]

Tonatiuh isqueer and has spoken openly about the importance of authentic representation in media.[5]

Career

In 2021, Tonatiuh made his film acting debut in a minor role in the independent comedy filmShoplifters of the World.[7] In 2024, he played a supporting role in theNetflix action thriller filmCarry-On.[8] He then starred alongsideJennifer Lopez andDiego Luna inBill Condon's musical drama filmKiss of the Spider Woman, which premiered at the2025 Sundance Film Festival. He played Luis Molina, a jailed, gay window dresser.[8] In a mixed review of the film, David Rooney ofThe Hollywood Reporter wrote, "In a head-turning breakout performance, [Tonatiuh] can flip from proud to humiliated, self-dramatizing to selfless, often within a single line reading".[9]
