Football career

[edit]

Broad was born inStalybridge and after playing youth football with various clubs, he had an unsuccessful trial withManchester City in 1904.[2] In September 1905, he signed his first professional contract withWest Bromwich Albion where he made 14 league and cup appearances before joiningChesterfield in February 1908.

Broad remained atSaltergate until the end ofthe 1908–09 season, at the end of which the "Spireites" were relegated to theThird Division. Broad then returned to his nativeLancashire, joiningOldham Athletic in May 1909. At the end of Broad'sfirst season atBoundary Park, the "Latics" were promoted to theFirst Division as runners-up toManchester City. After three years with Oldham, during which he made over 140 first-team appearances, Broad was on the move again, this time back to theSecond Division withBristol City.

Broad remained with theAshton Gate club until after theFirst World War, making over 110 appearances,[1][3][4] before again returning to Lancashire and the First Division, withManchester City. Two years atHyde Road were followed by three seasons atStoke where Broad along with his brotherJimmy helped the "Potters" finish as Second Division runners-up in1921–22, although this was followed by relegation thefollowing season.[5] After three years inthe Potteries, where Broad made 89 first-team appearances, he moved tothe South Coast to joinSouthampton.

Broad still holds the distinction of being the oldest player ever signed by the "Saints", being just three weeks short of his 37th birthday.[2] AtThe Dell, he was used as cover forBill Henderson and only had a run of three games in October, followed by six in April.[6] In September 1925, Broad moved toWeymouth of theWestern League, before playing out his career withRhyl.[2]
