Tomiyama (富山町,Tomiyama-chō) was atown located inAwa District,Chiba Prefecture,Japan.
As of March 20, 2006, the town had an estimatedpopulation of 5,841 and adensity of 145 persons per km2. The total area was 40.34 km2.
Tomiyama was located at the southwest end of Chiba Prefecture, in an inland area of the southernBōsō Peninsula, with a small shoreline facing the entrance toTokyo Bay on thePacific Ocean. The town had a temperatemaritime climate with hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters.
The area around Tomiyama was the setting of theNansō Satomi Hakkenden, an epic novel byEdo period authorKyokutei Bakin.Tomiyama Town was created on February 11, 1955, from the merger of former Iwai Town and Heguri Village.
On March 20, 2006, Tomiyama, along with the towns ofChikura,Maruyama,Shirahama,Tomiura andWada, and the village ofMiyoshi (all fromAwa District),was merged to create the city ofMinamibōsō.
The economy of Tomiyama was largely based onhorticulture (primarily herbs and flowers), and summer tourism.
