TheTolmin dialect (Slovene:tolminsko narečje,[1]tolminščina[2]) is aSlovene dialect in theRovte dialect group. It is spoken in the watersheds of theBača and lowerIdrijca rivers, as well as the reaches of theSoča River in that area, bounded on the west by a line west ofTolmin andMost na Soči. Other settlements in the dialect area includeGrahovo ob Bači.[3][4]
The Tolmin dialect lackspitch accent, except inČiginj, where this is partially retained. It has short vowels resulting from accentual retraction of the typenàga <nogà 'foot', vowel reduction as in the central Slovene dialects,b <v (known asbetacizem in Slovene), and innovative Slovenian palatalization (e.g.,ščìra <sekira 'axe'). Longi andu have shortened, restricting the long vowel inventory toie,uo, anda. The dialect has undergone completeakanye and the lenition ofg > [ɦ].[3]
