Tirupati railway station (station code: TPTY[1]) is a railway station located in the Indianstate ofAndhra Pradesh. It servesTirupati and experiences a regular flow of tourists visiting theTirumala Venkateswara Temple in theTirupati district. It is anenvironmentally friendly station, and has been awarded a Gold rating by theIndian Green Building Council.[2] There are several railway stations that fall within the city limits of Tirupati, namelyTiruchanur,Renigunta Junction,Tirupati West Halt, andChandragiri railway station.[citation needed]
Themetre-gauge line of theSouth Indian Railway Company was opened in 1891. The line originally started fromVillupuram in theSouth Arcot district and passed throughKatpadi andChittoor toPakala.[3] TheGudur–Katpadi line, covering Tirupati, has since been converted tobroad gauge.[4][when?]
Tirupati is classified as anA1–category station in theGuntakal railway division.[5] It is one of the top one hundred booking stations among the Indian railways.[6]
