Afolding seat is aseat that folds away so as to occupy less space. When installed on atransit bus, it makes room for awheelchair or two. When installed on apassenger car, it provides extra seating.

In churches, it may have a projection called amisericord, which offers some support to a person standing in front when the seat is folded.

Folding seats may also be found instadiums,arenas,theaters andauditoriums to facilitate entry and exit.

Some folding seats inrapid transit mayfold-down rather thanfold up.

Inpassenger aircraft, folding seats calledjump seat, are used forcabin crew during start and landing.
