Timeline of geopolitical changes

This is atimeline of geopolitical changes around the world between 1900 and 1999. It includes dates ofdeclarations of independence, changes in country name, changes ofcapital city or name, andchanges in territory such as theannexation, cession, concession, occupation, orsecession of land. Territorial conquests as a result of war are included on the timeline at the conclusion ofmilitary campaigns, but changes in the course of specific battles and day-to-day operations are generally not included. Changes inairspace andmaritime territory are included only when they are subject to a dispute.[a] Over 50% of the world's borders today were drawn as a result of British and French imperialism. The British and French drew the modern borders of theMiddle East, 80% of the borders ofAfrica, inAsia after the independence of theBritish Raj andFrench Indochina and the borders ofEurope afterWorld War I as victors, as a result of theParis treaties.[1][2][3]

  31. ^Melbourne is sometimes said to have been the inaugural capital of Australia, from 1901 until 1927, whenParliament House, Canberra was opened. This is not so. Section 125 of theConstitution of Australia states that the seat of government is to be within the state ofNew South Wales but not less than 161 km fromSydney, and that until that place (Canberra) was built, theParliament of Australia would meet at Melbourne. That made Melbourne thede facto (but notde jure) seat of government 1901–1927, but it did not amount to Melbourne being declared the capital, and it was never so described in contemporary documents.
