Timothy Simon Roth (/rɒθ/; born 14 May 1961)[2] is an English actor. He was among a group of prominent British actors known as the "Brit Pack". After garnering attention in television productionsMade in Britain (1982) andMeantime (1983), Roth was nominated for theBAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer in his theatrical film debutThe Hit (1984). He gained further recognition for his roles in films, includingThe Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989),Vincent & Theo, andRosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (both 1990).

Roth has collaborated withQuentin Tarantino on several films, includingReservoir Dogs (1992),Pulp Fiction (1994),Four Rooms (1995), andThe Hateful Eight (2015). For his performance inRob Roy (1995), he won aBAFTA Award, and was nominated for theAcademy Award and theGolden Globe Award. Other film credits includeThe Legend of 1900 (1998),Planet of the Apes (2001),Funny Games (2007),Selma (2014),Luce (2019), andBergman Island (2021).

Roth made his directorial debut with the filmThe War Zone (1999). He played Cal Lightman on theFox seriesLie to Me (2009–11), Jim Worth / Jack Devlin on theSky Atlantic seriesTin Star (2017–20), andEmil Blonsky / Abomination in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, including the filmsThe Incredible Hulk (2008),Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and theDisney+ seriesShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022).

Early life

Timothy Simon Roth was born on 14 May 1961 inDulwich,London. His mother, Ann, was a painter and teacher. His father, Ernie, was aFleet Street journalist and painter.[3][4][5] His father was born inSheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to a family of Irish descent. Although he was not of Jewish background, his father changed his surname from "Smith" to the German/Yiddish "Roth" in the 1940s, as "an act of anti-Nazi solidarity".[6][5][7] Roth's father was aWorld War II veteran.[8][9]

Roth is a survivor ofchild sexual abuse, committed by his paternal grandfather, whom he has stated sexually abused him from childhood until his early teen years. He first revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse during press for the 1999 filmThe War Zone, which dealt with the topics of incest and sexual violence within a family, but declined to name the perpetrator at that time. In December 2016, he gave an interview toThe Guardian in which he said that his abuser was his grandfather, who had also abused his father when he was a child.[10]

Roth attended school inLambeth before moving toCroydon Technical School, due to bullying.[7] He attended theStrand School inTulse Hill. Roth wanted to be a sculptor and studied at London'sCamberwell College of Arts.[11]

Roth starred in television films in the 1980s, includingMade in Britain,Meantime andMurder with Mirrors. After his film debutThe Hit, he earned an Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He played anEast End character inKing of the Ghetto, a controversial drama based on a novel by Farukh Dhondy set inBrick Lane and broadcast by the BBC in 1986. Roth,Gary Oldman,Colin Firth,Daniel Day-Lewis,Bruce Payne andPaul McGann were dubbed theBrit Pack.[12][13][14]

In 1990, he playedVincent van Gogh inVincent & Theo, andGuildenstern inRosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

Roth became an international star when he collaborated withQuentin Tarantino on several films, includingReservoir Dogs,Pulp Fiction, andFour Rooms.

He played Archibald Cunningham inRob Roy. He won theBAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actor and aGolden Globe.[15] Roth starred inWoody Allen's musical filmEveryone Says I Love You and inThe Legend of 1900. He also co-starred withTupac Shakur in the filmGridlock'd. Roth made his directorial debut filmThe War Zone, a film version ofAlexander Stuart's novel. In 2001, he played General Thade the evilchimpanzee inTim Burton'sPlanet of the Apes. For theHarry Potter film series, Roth declined the role ofSeverus Snape, which went toAlan Rickman.[16]

Roth starred inFrancis Ford Coppola's filmYouth Without Youth,Michael Haneke'sFunny Games, and playedEmil Blonsky / Abomination, a Russian-born officer in the British Royal Marine Commandos, inThe Incredible Hulk.Louis Leterrier was a fan of Roth's work. Leterrier wrote onEmpire magazine: "it's great watching a normalCockney boy become a superhero!".[17] Roth starred in the television seriesLie to Me as Cal Lightman, an expert on body language assisting local and federal law organisations with crime.[18] A fan ofMonty Python since his youth, Roth appeared in the 2009 television documentary,Monty Python: Almost the Truth (Lawyers Cut).[19] He appeared on the cover ofManic Street Preachers' 2010 studio album,Postcards from a Young Man.[20]

In 2012, he became the president of the jury for theUn Certain Regard section at the2012 Cannes Film Festival.[21] He starred asFIFA PresidentSepp Blatter inUnited Passions, a film about football's governing body, released in 2014, to coincide with FIFA's 110th anniversary, and the2014 FIFA World Cup.[22] Roth played Oswaldo Mobray in the ensemble western filmThe Hateful Eight,[23] and played a butler in a deleted scene for the filmOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.[24]

Roth starred in the 2015 filmChronic which had a limited release.[25] He received anIndependent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead nomination. Roth collaborated with directorMichel Franco again, in 2021, when he starred inSundown.[26] Roth was also an executive producer on Franco's 2017 film,April's Daughter.[27]

In 2017, Roth appeared in five episodes of thethird season ofTwin Peaks.[28] Roth also starred in British crime dramaTin Star, which ran from 2017 to 2020.[29]

Roth reprised his role as Emil Blonsky / Abomination in the filmShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and in theDisney+ seriesShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022), both set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[30][31]

In 2022, Roth starred in the psychological horror filmResurrection.[32] The same year he also appeared in New Zealand sports drama,Punch.[33] In 2023, Roth appeared in 10 episodes of the Australian drama,Last King of the Cross.[34]

In 2025, Roth starred in the British thrillerTornado.[35] He is due to appear in historical crime drama,The Immortal Man, a continuation of the British television seriesPeaky Blinders.[36]

Personal life

Roth's son Jack, born to Lori Baker in 1984,[37] is also an actor.[38] Roth married Nikki Butler in 1993. They had two sons, Timothy Hunter and Michael Cormac, named forHunter S. Thompson andCormac McCarthy respectively.[39][40] On 16 October 2022, Cormac, a musician, died aged 25 fromgerm cell cancer.[41]

Political views

As of 2008, Roth was a supporter of theGreen Party of England and Wales.[42] Roth protested against theIraq War and later criticised former Prime MinisterTony Blair for his involvement, stating: "I've always felt Blair should be hauled off in handcuffs and put inWormwood Scrubs. I think he's profited from the death ofReg's son and the Iraq war. I think that's where he belongs... I have nothing but contempt for him."[43] He endorsed SenatorBernie Sanders for President in the2016 United States presidential election.[44] Roth was critical ofDonald Trump's victory in 2016, saying: "I hate Trump. I hate everything that he stands for."[45]
