Tim Biskup (born 1967),[1] is an American visual artist and designer. He is known for illustration, painting, sculpture, and product design.

Early life and education

Tim Biskup was born on September 21, 1967, inSanta Monica, California.[citation needed] He realized he wanted to become an artist when he visited theCentre Pompidou in 1984 with his family.[citation needed] There he was exposed to the works ofRoberto Matta,Niki de Saint Phalle, andJean Tinguely.[citation needed] He enrolled in theOtis College of Art and Design, Fine Art department in 1986 only to drop out in 1988.[citation needed] He stated in an interview that he was frustrated with the fact that there was an excessive emphasis on conceptualizing art, rather learning how to make art.[2]

Career

He works with playful and vibrantpsychedelic imagery in the pop-design genre that emerged in the late 20th century through such diverse media assilkscreening,textile production, androtocast vinyl.[3] Biskup was a co-founder of theGAMA-GO clothing line in San Francisco; working alongside Chris Edmundson and Greg Long from 2001 until 2006.[4]

During hisEther Show in the summer of 2007, Biskup displayed works from his self-dubbedBaroque Modernist style based on fear, loss, and pain.[3] In 2012,Juxtapoz commissioned Biskup for itsAdult Swim-themed issue's cover art, which was inspired byTim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!.[5]

In 2017, Biskup opened the gallery and project space,Face Guts located inGlassell Park, Los Angeles.[6]

Biskup's 240-page retrospectivemonograph andautobiography,Tree of Life, was published in October 2019 byChronicle Books which theLA Weekly described as showcasing "his unique hybrids of flourishes, atmospherics, geometry, gesture, character, figure, flora and fauna, and an intense, luminous, complex and nuanced supersaturated palette."[7]
