Thomas Hitschler (born 27 June 1982) is a German politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD) who served as a member of theBundestag from the state ofRhineland-Palatinate from 2013 to 2025.[1]
In addition to his parliamentary work, Hitschler served asParliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defence in thecoalition government ofChancellorOlaf Scholz from 2021 to 2025.[2]
Hitschler became member of the Bundestag in the2013 German federal election,[3] representing theSüdpfalz district. From 2014 until 2021, he was part of the Defence Committee, where he served as his parliamentary group'srapporteur on the infrastructure of theBundeswehr. From 2018 until 2021, he has also a member of the Committee on Home Affairs.[4][5] In 2020 he joined theParliamentary Oversight Panel (PKGr), which provides parliamentary oversight of Germany’s intelligence servicesBND,BfV andMAD.
In the negotiations to form acoalition government under the leadership ofChancellorAngela Merkel following the2017 federal elections, Hitschler was part of the working group on foreign policy, led byUrsula von der Leyen,Gerd Müller andSigmar Gabriel.
In addition to his committee assignments, Hitschler was a member of the German delegation to theFranco-German Parliamentary Assembly since 2019.
For the2021 elections, Hitschler was elected to lead the SPD campaign in Rhineland-Palatinate.[6] In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of the SPD, theGreen Party and theFree Democrats (FDP) following the elections, he was part of his party's delegation in the working group onhomeland security, civil rights and consumer protection, co-chaired byChristine Lambrecht,Konstantin von Notz andWolfgang Kubicki.[7]
In December 2023, Hitschler announced that he would not stand in the2025 federal elections but instead resign from active politics by the end of the term.[8]
