Thomas Brunce[a] (c. 1388 – 6 December 1445) was a 15th-centuryBishop of Rochester and thenBishop of Norwich.
Brunce was the son ofWilliam Brunce of Brunce's Court inSutton Courtenay inBerkshire (nowOxfordshire). He studied atOxford, possibly atNew College, where he became friends withThomas Beckington (laterBishop of Bath and Wells).
Brunce entered theChurch and held a number of posts inLincolnshire, being collatedArchdeacon of Stow in 1419.[citation needed] He also undertook diplomatic missions on theContinent for KingHenry V.[1] In 1427 he was collatedArchdeacon of Berkshire[citation needed] and in 1429 was electedBishop of Chichester, although the latter position was given toSimon Sydenham instead.[2] He wasDean of Salisbury (since 1431) when,Pope Eugene IV wanted to make himBishop of Worcester on 24 September 1433,[3] but KingHenry VI of England had other ideas and he was madeBishop of Rochester instead on 21 February 1435.[4]
Brunce was consecrated on 1 May 1435.[4] On 19 September 1437, he was transferred to thesee of Norwich,[5] where he is remembered for upholding the rights of theCathedral over the townsfolk and for erecting the greatrood loft.[1] He died on 6 December 1445[5] at the Episcopalmanor of Hoxne inSuffolk.
Executors of Thomas Brouns, former bishop of Norwich, are listed in 1460 as litigants in the Court of Common Pleas.[6]
