Thiago Carpini Barbosa (born 16 July 1984), is a Brazilian professionalfootballcoach and former player who played as adefensive midfielder. He is the current head coach ofJuventude.
Born inValinhos,São Paulo, Carpini made his senior debut with local sideGuarani Sumareense [pt] in the 2004Campeonato Paulista Segunda Divisão. In 2006, after playing in the year'sCampeonato Capixaba forEstrela do Norte, he signed forPonte Preta in theSérie A.
Carpini made his top tier debut on 31 May 2006, starting in a 1–0 away win overJuventude. On 10 April 2007, he moved to fellow first division sideAtlético Mineiro.[1]
In July 2008, after being rarely used atGalo, Carpini agreed to a contract withSérie B teamAmérica de Natal. On 23 December of that year, he was announced atBahia.[2]
Carpini began the 2011 season atCRAC, but returned to his home state withInter de Bebedouro for the year's Copa Paulista. He subsequently rejoined CRAC before finishing the 2012 campaign atSão José-SP.[3]
In November 2012, Carpini was included inMonte Azul's squad for the upcoming season.[4] After playing the 2013Copa FGF withNovo Hamburgo, he representedGuarani-MG in the2014 Campeonato Mineiro.
On 17 April 2014, Carpini joinedGuarani in theSérie C.[5] He left the club in 2016 and joinedPenapolense.[6]
On 24 April 2017, Carpini was announced atCaldense for theSérie D.[7] He asked to leave the club on 6 June, after alleging personal reasons,[8] and retired shortly after.
After retiring, Carpini started his coaching career as an assistant ofEvaristo Piza atXV de Piracicaba. He followed Piza toBotafogo-PB, before returning to Guarani on 14 June 2019, as a permanent assistant coach.[9]
On 21 August 2019, afterRoberto Fonseca's dismissal, Carpini was named interim head coach of Guarani.[10] He was permanently appointed head coach of the club on 25 November,[11] but left on 29 August 2020.[12]
On 30 September 2020, Carpini was named head coach of fellow second division teamOeste.[13] He was sacked on 19 October, with the club in the last position.[14]
Carpini was announced atInter de Limeira on 26 November 2020.[15] He left the club on 14 May 2021, after reaching the quarterfinals of theCampeonato Paulista.[16]
On 4 October 2021, Carpini took overSanto André forthe upcomingPaulistão.[17] He also reached the quarterfinals of the tournament with the side before leaving.
On 28 March 2022, Carpini replacedElano at the helm ofSérie D sideFerroviária.[18] He was dismissed on 23 May, after a poor run of form.[19]
Eight days after leavingAFE, Carpini was appointedÁgua Santa head coach for theCopa Paulista.[20] He led the club to the finals of the2023 Campeonato Paulista, losing toPalmeiras; despite finishing second, he was named the tournament's best head coach.[21]
Carpini departed Água Santa on 13 May 2023 to take overJuventude in division two.[22] WithJu in the penultimate position in his arrival, he renewed his contract with the club on 1 September,[23] and led them to promotion in the2023 Série B.[24]
On 11 January 2024, it was announced that Carpini had agreed to becomeSão Paulo's head coach in the place ofDorival Júnior;[25]Tricolor paid aR$ 1 million fee for the coach.[26] Under his leadership, São Paulo won the2024 Supercopa do Brasil over rivalsPalmeiras, with Carpini becoming the youngest head coach in the century to win a top tier title, at the age of 39. In the2024 Campeonato Paulista, however, the club was knocked out in the quarterfinals byNovorizontino.
Carpini was sacked on 18 April 2024, after a poor start in both the2024 Copa Libertadores and theSérie A.[27]
On 14 May 2024, Carpini replacedLéo Condé at the helm ofVitória also in the top tier.[28] On 9 July of the following year, after being knocked out of the2025 Copa do Nordeste toConfiança, he was dismissed.[29]
On 4 August 2025, Juventude announced the return of Carpini as head coach.[30]
