Theo Jay Wharton (born 15 November 1994) is afootballer who plays as amidfielder for theSaint Kitts and Nevis national team.
Wharton was born inCwmbran, Torfaen,[2] and is the son of former footballer Sean Wharton and godson of former footballerNathan Blake.[3]
Wharton played forPontypool-based side Race Juniors and helped the team toTesco Cup final at theCity of Manchester Stadium.[3]
Wharton started his career atCardiff City, playing for their under-18 side during the 2011–12 season. His impressive form for the youth team resulted in a first-team call up by managerMalky Mackay for theFA Cup game againstWest Bromwich Albion, in which he came on as a substitute.[4] Following his debut, Mackay admitted that Wharton would train with first team and had a "big future ahead of him".[5] On 29 March 2012, Wharton signed his first professional contract which would keep at Cardiff until at least June 2014.[6]
Wharton joinedNational League South clubWeston-super-Mare on 23 March 2017 onloan.[7]
Wharton signed for newly relegatedNational League North clubYork City on 30 June 2017 on a one-year contract.[8] He joined York's divisional rivalsTamworth on 22 December 2017 on a one-month loan.[9] Tamworth's attempts to extend his loan for the rest of the season were unsuccessful,[10] and he finished his spell at the club with four appearances.[11] Wharton made nine appearances for York[11][12] as they finished 2017–18 in 11th place in the table.[13] He was released at the end of the season.[14]
Wharton signed for National League North clubNuneaton Borough in July 2018.[15]
Wharton signed forNational League North clubHereford on 22 December 2018.[16]
Wharton signed forCymru Premier club Barry Town United on 13 January 2020.[17]
Wharton was first selected for theWales national under-17 team for the2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round, starting two matches againstBelgium andDenmark. Wharton was called up to the Wales under-21 team to play Moldova on 22 March 2013.[18] On 9 September 2014, Wharton made hisWales under-21 debut in a 1–1 draw againstLithuania under-21s.[19]
In 2016, Wharton chose to switch allegiance to play forSaint Kitts and Nevis, the country where his grandparents were born. He made his debut for the side on 13 November 2016 in a 2–0 defeat toHaiti.[20]
