The Record is a dailynewspaper based inStockton, California , servingSan Joaquin andCalaveras Counties . It is owned byGannett .
The Record was first published by Irving Martin on April 7, 1895.[ 1] Speidel Newspapers, Inc. bought the newspaper from the Martin family in 1969.[ 2] The company merged with theGannett Company in 1977[ 3] [ 4] and soldThe Record to theOmaha World-Herald Company in 1994.[ 5] Ottaway Community Newspapers boughtThe Record for $144 million in 2003.[ 6]
The company's name was changed to Dow Jones Local Media Group, and was sold byNews Corp in 2013 toFortress Investment Group for $87 million. The newspapers were managed byGateHouse Media ,[ 7] which soon after the sale filed prepackagedChapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure its debt obligations in order to accommodate the acquisition.[ 8]
In October 2018,The Record closed its press facility.[ 9] In 2019, GateHouse merged with Gannett.[ 10] In March 2024,The Record announced it will switch from carrier to postal delivery.[ 11]
