The Penguin Book of Homosexual Verse (1983) is ananthology ofpoetry dealing with "a history of the different ways in whichhomosexual people have been seen or have seen themselves",[1] fromclassical antiquity to the contemporary period. It was compiled byStephen Coote and published byPenguin Books.[2]
Although praising its subject matter, Paul Knobel ofThe Age criticised the broad scope of the anthology, as well as itsEurocentric focus, as the anthology focuses on literature inEnglish and contains poems in most major European languages (with the exception ofPolish), and twoArabic poems; no East Asian, African or Oceanian content was included.[3] Some significant contemporary Americangay male poets were also not included in the book.[4]
