History

[edit]

The News Virginian traces its publishing history to theValley Virginian, which issued its first edition in 1901.[3] TheValley Virginian consolidated with theWaynesboro News in November 1929, becoming theWaynesboro News-Virginian by owner / publisher Louis Spilman.[4] In 1960, the paper took on its current moniker ofThe News Virginian.[5]

At some point,[when?] the paper was acquired byMedia General.[6] On May 17, 2012, it was announced that investment companyBerkshire Hathaway would be acquiring Media General's newspaper division.[7] The deal closed June 25, 2012, with Berkshire Hathaway subsidiaryBH Media Group as the new owner and publisher.[8][9]

BH Media Group hiredLee Enterprises to manage its newspapers and websites starting on July 2, 2018.[10][11]

On January 29, 2020,Lee Enterprises announced an agreement to buy BH Media Group' newspapers, includingThe News Virginian.[12][13][14][15][16][17] The acquisition was completed on March 16, 2020.[18]

In 2023, subscription prices were increased to help bolster owner Lee Enterprises' poor financial position.[19]

Starting June 27, 2023, the print edition of the newspaper will be reduced to three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Also, the newspaper will transition from being delivered by a traditional newspaper delivery carrier to mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service.[20]
