The Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet (Italian:L'ultimo bacio di Romeo a Giulietta) is an 1823oil painting by the ItalianromanticartistFrancesco Hayez.[1][2] It was inspired as much by the 1523 novella byLuigi Da Porto as English writerWilliam Shakespeare's 1597 playRomeo and Juliet, and was a popular success.[3] The work wascommissioned byGiovanni Battista Sommariva. It was displayed at the annual exhibition of thePinacoteca di Brera inMilan. Today it is in the collection of theVilla Carlotta onLake Como.[4] Hayez also produced an 1830 paintingThe Marriage of Romeo and Juliet taken from Da Porto's novella.[5]
