The Battle of Fontenoy (French:La bataille de Fontenoy) is an 1828history painting by the FrenchartistHorace Vernet.[1]
It depicts theBattle of Fontenoy fought on the 11 May 1745 in modern-dayBelgium. Part of theWar of the Austrian Succession, Fontenoy was a notable French victory overAllied forces under the command ofDuke of Cumberland.[2]
Vernet became known for his battle scenes portraying the recentNapoleonic Wars, but for this work featured a victory of theAncien régime in the mid-eighteenth century. It included depictions ofLouis XV andLouis, Dauphin of France, respectively the grandfather and father of the reigning monarchCharles X. French commanderMaurice de Saxe is dismounted and doffing his hat to the mounted Louis and Dauphin as captured British and Dutchcolours are presented to him. CaptiveScottish soldiers of theBritish Army are huddled together in the left foreground while on the right a father embraces his son who has been awarded theOrder of Saint Louis for gallantry.[3]
It appeared at theParis Salon of 1836. It is now on display in theGallery of Battle at theMusée de l'Histoire de France at thePalace of Versailles.[4]
