Nepalese mountaineer (1987/1988–2023)
Tenjen Sherpa (1987/1988 – 7 October 2023), also known asTenjen Lama Sherpa , was a Nepalesemountaineer who climbed all 14eight-thousander together withKristin Harila in 92 days.[ 2] [ 3] [ 1] He went missing after an avalanche hit onShishapangma on 7 October 2023.[ 4] [ 5] He was declared dead by Chinese authorities on 8 October 2023.[ 6]
On 15 May 2019, he and his brothers established the recordMost siblings to climb Kangchenjunga .[ 7] [ 8] On 27 July 2023, Tenjen Lama Sherpa became the 50th recorded mountaineer to have successfully climbedall 14 eight thousanders . Since 27 July 2023, together withKristin Harila , he held the record as the fastest person to reach the summit of all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, which they did in 92 days.[ 9] They usedhelicopters to move betweenbase camps and addedsupplemental oxygen .[ 10] [ 11] [ 12]

Lama was guiding American climberGina Marie Rzucidlo , when he was lost in an avalanche onShishapangma . At the time, Rzucidlo was vying withAnna Gutu to become the first American woman to climb all 14 of theeight-thousanders , a rivalry some have suggested as why the pair kept climbing despite deteriorating weather conditions.[ 31] [ 32]
