Definitions?

[edit]

Are there definitions for the categories used here? In particular, I'm wondering about "major" colleges. What does this mean? Does it have any ancient authority? I'd expect there to be only four here as, e.g., in theEpulones article. The Vestals are also sui generis, though I supposed they could fall in the broader "other" category. -Eponymous-Archon (talk)16:22, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There is an ancient reference toquattuor amplissima collegia, but in my opinion the infobox need not get hung up on technicalities, and I do think that when I created this, I based "major colleges" on modern scholarship that took into consideration the influence and power of the Vestals, for instance. "Major" in English is not intended to be a technical or pedantic term but simply designates major topics of the Roman priesthood. Ifcollegia is in error, we might come up with another term while preserving the utility of the infobox and avoiding "least surprise" in rendering the Vestals and flamens invisible.Cynwolfe (talk)22:46, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
