Teatro ZinZanni is acircusdinner theater that began in the neighborhood ofLower Queen Anne inSeattle, Washington.[1] It has since expanded its operations toSan Francisco andChicago.

History

Teatro ZinZanni was created by Norman Langill,[2] and was once described as "theMoulin Rouge meetsCirque du Soleil."[3] The show is a blend of European circus andcabaret[4] andAmerican vaudeville performed in aBelgianspiegeltent (mirror tent).[5][6] Until mid-2011 the show was produced by the Seattle-basednon-profit events company, One Reel. Teatro Zinzanni is now an independent company.

Teatro ZinZanni began in Seattle in October 1998 for an eight-week run and ended up playing to sold-out houses until it closed on December 31, 1999. Members of the original cast included tap dancer Wayne Doba,[7][8] also known for being San Francisco Giants mascot theCrazy Crab, Kevin Kent, andAnn Wilson of the rock groupHeart.[9] It then moved its operation to San Francisco, opening there in March 2000 at Pier 29 onThe Embarcadero. In 2002, it reopened a permanent operation in Seattle'sBelltown district. The operation has since moved to Seattle's theatre district on Mercer Street across fromSeattle Center. As of 2017, Teatro ZinZanni has moved toRedmond, Washington, in theMarymoor Park area. This is said to be a temporary location through April 2018, at which time they will move to a permanent location. Teatro ZinZanni's San Francisco location closed its operation on December 31, 2011, due to the city's preparation for theAmerica's Cup, but has plan to reopen at another location on the Embarcadero after fund-raising is complete.[10]

Teatro ZinZanni opened a Chicago location in the downtown theatre district above theJames M. Nederlander Theatre in 2019.

The many performers in Teatro ZinZanni productions have includedJoan Baez,[7] Andrea Conway,[7][8]Duffy Bishop,[11] Yamil Borges, Kevin Kent, Martha Davis of the rock groupThe Motels,[1]Michael Davis,El Vez,[3]Frank Ferrante,[8][12]Geoff Hoyle,[12]Sally Kellerman,[13][14]Liliane Montevecchi,[8]Maria Muldaur,[15][16] Melanie Stace,[17] andPuddles Pity Party.[18]

Although first billed as individual performers Andrea Conway and Wayne Doba later appear in several productions as real life husband and wife tap-dancing vaudeville comedy duo “Dik and Mitzi”.[19][20][21]

Teatro ZinZanni has produced two CDs:[22]The Divas,[8] with Baez, Montevecchi, Kellerman,Thelma Houston and others, andOmnium, a collaboration of TZ MaestroNorman Durkee with Martha Davis.

In addition to Teatro ZinZanni's evening dinner shows, Teatro ZinZanni has introduced a variety of special projects including brunches,[23] late-night cabarets (Cabaret Lunatique, Mezzo Lunatico[23]), a concert series (Mirror Tent Music), children's/family programming (Big Top Rock, "Zirkus Fantazmo"[23]) and offers year-round education opportunities including day camps.[23][24][25]
