Fritz has two older maternal half-brothers, Chris and Kyle.[6][7] His uncle,Harry Fritz, also played professional tennis[8] and competed in, and won, thelongest Davis Cup match of all time (by number of games).[9] His aunt, Laura Fritz, was a competitive swimmer reaching a top-5 in the world ranking in the 100 freestyle as well as a member of the world record relay team in the 400 X4 freestyle.
Fritz grew up with his brothers inRancho Santa Fe in theSan Diego metropolitan area. He attendedTorrey Pines High School, where he won theCIF singles title in the San Diego section as a freshman. A few months into his sophomore year, he switched to an online high school to play full-time ITF junior events.[10]

He was the first American to hold this title sinceDonald Young in 2005 andAndy Roddick in 2000.[13]
