Taylor Adams (born 20 September 1993) is a professionalAustralian rules footballer playing for theSydney Swans in theAustralian Football League (AFL). He previously played for theGreater Western Sydney Giants from 2012 to 2013 and theCollingwood Football Club from 2014 to 2023.

State football

Adams started out playing Australian rules football atSt Joseph's, at under-14 and under-16 levels, before joining theGeelong Falcons in theTAC Cup.[1] He served as a captain for Geelong Falcons,[2] and the opportunities and responsibilities helped shape him and he thanked the club during his firstAustralian Football League (AFL) season.[3] Adams represented Vic County in the2011 AFL Under 18 Championships and was selected for the All-Australian Team after averaging 18.8possessions over 4 games.[4][5] He later had an impressive performance at theAFL Draft Combine, finishing in the top 10 on thebeep test.[5][6]

AFL career

Greater Western Sydney (2012–2013)

Adams was drafted by theGreater Western Sydney Giants with pick 13 in the2011 national draft.[1] He made his debut in round 5 of the2012 season, againstWestern Bulldogs atManuka Oval,[7] kicking a goal, taking fivemarks, and having sevenkicks, 10handballs, 17disposals, and threetackles.[1]

Collingwood (2014–2023)

In October 2013, Adams was traded toCollingwood, as a swap forHeath Shaw.[8][9] He made his debut for Collingwood in the opening round of the2014 season, againstFremantle.[7] After joining the club, at the beginning the pressure and large crowds affected him, leading to him performing poorly until team-mateBen Johnson advised him to chill, leading to him playing better football.[10] In round 8 of the2015 season, Adams played his 50th AFL game.[7] Ahead of the2016 season, Adams joined Collingwood's leadership group.[11] Ahead of the2017 season Adams was appointed vice-captain alongsideSteele Sidebottom,[12] before being selected only for the leadership group in 2018[13] and 2019,[14] returning to vice-captaincy ahead of the2020 season.[15] In the third round of the2018 season, Adams played his 100th AFL game againstCarlton.[16] At the end of the season he was awarded Collingwood's Bob Rose award for being the Best Finals' Player, after averaging 29possessions, fiveclearances, and seventackles over four games.[17][18][19] He was a standout player in theGrand Final, with 31 possessions, nine clearances, and a goal,[20] leading to him being voted the runner-up for theNorm Smith Medal, which was won byWest Coast playerLuke Shuey.[21][22] In July 2019, Adams signed a five-year contract extension.[23]In September 2022 Adams tore his groin off the bone.[24]

Sydney (2024–)

After missing the 2023 Collingwood premiership side due to a hamstring injury, Adams requested a trade toSydney in pursuit of more time in the midfield.[25] He was traded on 11 October.[26]

Personal life

Taylor grew up inMount Duneed just outside the coastal town ofTorquay inVictoria.[27] He attendedChristian College inGeelong.[28] He came from aGeelong-supporting family, including his father and grandmother.[2]

Adams is currently studying a Graduate Certificate of Business Administration atDeakin University.[29]

Charges and arrests

In April 2012, Adams was charged with assault after an altercation at a bar inGeelong which happened in January.[30] In January 2015, he was arrested and charged for beingdrunk in public after a fight at a Geelong bar.[31]
