Tavadi (Georgian:თავადი, "prince", lit. "head/chief" [man], fromGeorgian:თავიtavi, "head", with the prefix of agent-di) was a feudal title inGeorgia first applied in theLate Middle Ages usually translated inEnglish asPrince (most commonly) andDuke (less commonly). The title was designated for dynastic princes who were heads of families, akin tomtavari who had a higher standing.

History

The tavadis were subordinates andvassals of thekings,queens,mtavaris andbatonishvilis but had administrative, judicial and tax immunities in their dominions and had their own military forces. The lower noble feudal class of Georgia had the title ofaznauri who were subordinates of tavadis.
