Tau Piscium (τ Piscium) is an orange-huedstar in thezodiacconstellation ofPisces. With anapparent visual magnitude of +4.52,[2] it is a dim star but visible to the naked eye. Based upon an annualparallax shift of 19.32 mas as seen from Earth,[1] it is located around 169 light years from theSun. It is most likely (96% chance) a member of thethin disk population.[6]
This is anevolvedK-typegiant star with astellar classification of K0.5 IIIb.[4] It is about 2.27[5] billion years and is ared clump star on thehorizontal branch, which indicates it is generating energy throughhelium fusion at itscore.[3] The star has 1.7[7] times themass of the Sun and has expanded to about 10 times theSun's radius.[5] It is radiating 45 times theSun's luminosity from itsphotosphere at aneffective temperature of 4,624 K.[5]
InChinese,奎宿 (Kuí Sù), meaningLegs, refers to an asterism consisting of τ Piscium,η Andromedae,65 Piscium,ζ Andromedae,ε Andromedae,δ Andromedae,π Andromedae,ν Andromedae,μ Andromedae,β Andromedae,σ Piscium,91 Piscium,υ Piscium,φ Piscium,χ Piscium andψ¹ Piscium. Consequently, theChinese name for τ Piscium itself is奎宿十一 (Kuí Sù shíyī, English:the Eleventh Star of Legs.)[9]
